Things
to Do - Horseback Riding
Horseback
rides are available at a nearby riding stable in the Twin Lakes area.
Crooked Creek Trails, near Logansport and Lake Cicott on US 24, is less
than 20 minutes east of Monticello. The stable has been in operation for
14 years. It has more than 40 horses of all sizes and they are available
for guided tours. "It's family fun for all ages," says owner,
Jan Riley. "Come see our new facilities." Her husband John is
co-owner. Crooked Creek Trails offers one-hour rides and 30-minute rides
for both adults and children. Pony rides are featured for children ages
6 and under. Gene Ohrt, who co-owns and manages the stables and more than
six miles of trails, says the stable can also accommodate handicapped
riders. The rides, which are open from 9 a.m. until dusk, run through
woodlands and along scenic Crooked Creek. Reservations are needed for
Moonlight Rides, a different kind of riding experiences, according to
Ohrt and the Rileys. Reservations are required for groups of six or more
people. Primitive camp sites are available throughout the summer. Rental
of the picnic pavilion or tenting is available on the island. Cooking
areas, firewood and picnic tables are available to campers. Crooked Creek
features a new, larger tack shop selling Western apparel and souvenirs.
Crooked Creek has a boarding facility and they have horses for sale.
Riding lessons
are also available. Crooked Creek takes most credit cards, including MasterCard
and Visa. For more information, call (574)643-9395 or toll-free 1-800-317-5016.
