Things
to Do - Golf
Pine
View
Each
year, the Pine View golf course does more to live up to its name.
Over the years, thousands of trees have been added to the course.
Pine View is located beside Pine View Resort. It includes a 25-room
lodge and banquet facility which opened during the summer of 1996
as well as a separate 50-room lodge complex. Pine View is located
north of Monticello at 5310 Norway Road. The resort is owned by
SAJV Incorporated, who also own and operate Pond View, and older18-hole
golf course near Star City. The Pine View links offer a 6,898 yard,
par-72 layout, which carries a rating of 72.8. Steve Bonnell, a
Class A-PGA professional, is head pro again this year both Pine
View near Indiana Beach and Pond View, located 22 miles away near
Star City. Bonnell says the Pine View front nine is "pretty
much flat" terrain, while the back nine can be more challenging,
with trees and a ravine. In addition, there are seven ponds that
come into play on holes 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 18.
The course features a completely new computerized watering system
to water all greens, tees and fairways. New yard markers, including
a description of each hole, have also recently been erected. Bent
grass tees are just one of Pine View's latest additions. At each
tee, benches have been installed. An additional rest room facility
is located near holes 3 and 12. Members of the Bonnell family are
no strangers to golf. Together they planned and developed the Star
City course from land once used as a county landfill and pasture.
It is a very hilly, wooded 6,250-yard, par 70 design. It is considered
one of the most challenging courses in the area. The newest addition
from the Bonnells and to the golf industry is the building of an
18-hole championship golf course in Culver, Ind., on the southeast
corner of Lake Maxinkuckee. With the design and help of Pete Dye
and his son P.B., the course should the course should prove to be
very challenging to all. The new project at Mystic Hills opened
in July of 1998 with a new pro shop. Along with the 18-hole course
will be a fully stocked pro shop and driving range. The ground floor
of the new clubhouse at Pine View houses a pro shop, carrying a
full line of clubs, balls, bags, shoes and accessories. There is
also a lounge, snack bar and a spacious outside wood deck around
the Pine View clubhouse. This summer Pine View will be sporting
a new beverage cart out on the course for the golfers. A concrete
ramp leads to the basement level, where golf carts are stored. Pine
View has a fleet of 78 gas powered Yamaha carts. The gas powered
golf carts are for rent. Ann (Bonnell) Shidler, who manages the
clubhouse, and her husband Fred and son Greg, are the course superintendents.
Memberships include play at both Pine View along with Pond View
in Star City. Members also receive five plays at Mystic Hills Golf
Club and four plays at either Moss Creek or Chesapeake Run. Pine
View members can also play Sandy Pines Golf Course in DeMotte for
a discounted rate of $20. All day green fees for Pine Island, the
par three, will be $5. Golfers wishing to play the par three should
go to the office at Pine View Resort to pay green fees. Club rental
available also. |
Tippecanoe
Country Club
Golfers
from in and out of the state return to the Tippecanoe Country Club
each year to participate in it's tournaments. This year the men's
tournament's have changed from a one day event to a two day format
thus opening the events to more golfers. The annual Monticello Amateur
Tournament will be played this summer and the states largest Pro-Am
event will be held also at the country club. The Monticello's Women's
Amateur Golf Tournament also draws in a large number of entrants.
TCC has six classes of memberships available. Family, Single and
Junior (Golfers age 35 and younger) and Young Juniors. Memberships
include golf and social events. For the non-golfer, Family Social
and Single Social Memberships are available. All members enjoy weekly
events ranging from contract bridge, special outings and great parties.
PGA golf pro Jim Ousley also takes appointments for golf lessons.
TCC also offers a full service pro shop throughout the summer. Tippecanoe
Country Club's dining and catering facilities are owned by Ed and
Linda Fain. They will feature several different dining styles along
with a full service bar. Eddie's is open several days a week in
season. Eddie's contemporary dining room is open Friday and Saturday
nights from 5:30-9 p.m. TCC, one of White County's oldest and most
treasured attractions, is a delight to all visitors of the Monticello
area. TCC is a semi-private club with golfing, dining and catering
facilities open to the public, except for members-only functions.
Bordered by Lake Shafer, the Tippecanoe Country Club ha severed
the Monticello community since before the lakes were developed.
Formed in 1920, TCC preceded the building of Norway Dam by three
years and the Oakdale Dam by five years. In 1922, the first clubhouse
was constructed. TCC has since been updated and expanded several
times. The most important change to the course was in 1961 when
Indianapolis architect, Pete Dye, helped install greens and tees
to bring the course up to 18 holes. In the spring of 2001, TCC added
a $600,00 irrigation system that will water the entire golf course
and grounds. Today, the beautiful 18-hole, par-72 course is a challenge
to golfers. Its scenic 6,728 yards are meticulously groomed, making
the course one of the finest in the state. The course, located north
of Monticello, is just one mile north of Indiana Beach. The course
opens as soon as weather permits in the spring, usually around mid-March,
and remains open until after Thanksgiving-again weather permitting.
Last year, more than 24,000 rounds of golf were played at TCC, with
more than 10,000 of them non-members and summer visitors. TCC grounds
are maintained by an extensive in-house crew led by course superintendent
Ross Bushman. Bushman is a Purdue University graduate with a degree
in Agronomy. He was the former assistant to the green superintendent
at Purdue University Golf Courses. The crew keeps the grounds neatly
trimmed and beautiful, which almost hides the difficulty of the
course. Eddie's is also available for full-service catering. It
is an excellent site for wedding receptions, class reunions, family
reunions and corporate functions. Whether its hitting the greens
or just relaxing with friends, TCC is the facility for you. For
